Bret Holmes joins me to talk about our passion for shifting, and specifically driving manual transmission cars. We talk about how young drivers DO have an interest in performance driving, the future of manual transmissions, and the 3 Pedal Car Club of America.
Bret has a strong passion for driving manual transmission vehicles, which was the initial motivation for starting the 3 Pedal Car Club of America. You can – and should – join by going to www.3pcca.com.

The amount of cars sold in the United States with a manual transmission is about %3. Though I’m willing to bet that percentage grows quite a bit when you pare it down to performance/enthusiast cars (not long ago it was closer to %50, I’ll need to research current trends). The current Civic SI and Type R, Shelby GT-350, Veloster N, among others are only offered in a manual. That being said, there are also other’s that are only offered in an auto/dsg gearbox (McLaren and Ferrari, for example). I will always have a manual. I definitely understand that the automatic will be faster, but I’ll choose the 3 pedal version every time. My paycheck does not depend on it (I’m not Patrick Long) and I’m not sure I (or many others) could fully utilize the advantages of the automatic for it to matter. So at that point, I’ll choose the more fun version, at least for me.
