My job is to help drivers like you go from where you’re currently at to where you want to go. In other words, give you the directions for your driving: Driving Directions. That’s the title of my driving tips, stories, and opinions articles. Clever? Silly? You be the judge.
If you’re seriously passionate about all things driving, you’ve come to the right place. Driving Directions is an “edu-taining,” weekly (sometimes more, sometimes less) email newsletter that is the perfect read for those who geek out on driving culture.
What’s in Driving Directions? I write about:
- New skills and approaches to driving
- Stories and lessons from life at the track (like when I coached at Le Mans, a Michigan NASCAR race, and an AMA Flat Track motorcycle race all on one weekend)
- Proven driving tips to make you an even better driver
- Insights and opinions on various races and events
- And I bust a few myths about driving
See below for a few recent posts. Like what you see? Consider becoming a Subscriber. A basic subscription is free, but you get quite a bit more when you become a paid subscriber (including access to more than a hundred past articles in the archive).

Storytime: Sleighing It
I wrote this many years ago, but thought about sharing it today, just for fun (although there might be a few “lessons” included).I was fortunate to meet Michael Sleighmacher a couple of years ago. Sleighmacher has been Santa Claus's driver coach for almost two decades...

Racey Thoughts: Red Bull Thinking
Sergio Perez is gone from F1. Technically, he’s gone from Red Bull F1, but unless the new Cadillac F1 team decides that Checo is the right experienced driver they need to lead their launch in 2026, we’ve seen the last of the Mexican on the Grand Prix grid. I’ve been a...
Speed Secrets: Sim Training for Real-World Track Drivers — PART 1
Today (and next Sunday), I’m writing about using a simulator to help you improve your real-world driving — both the why and the how. To start, I got my first high-end simulator back in 2004. At that time, I felt that it was a good tool for learning tracks, but also...
Driving Directions: It’s a Community of Driving Geeks!
When I first began offering driving information online (originally with an Inner Speed Secrets webinar way back in 2015), I wasn’t really sure what to expect. And I had no idea how to present to a screen! After many years of talking to, and facilitating dialogue with...
Driving Lessons: Ancora Imparo
Often attributed to Michelangelo, “Ancora imparo” is how I try to live my life. It’s a reminder to be curious, ask questions, and grow. Roughly translated, it means, “I am still learning.” Interestingly, the need to remind himself and others of how important it is to...
Racey Thoughts: What Made Vettel So Fast, and What Can We Learn from Him?
I recently found an article I’d written a little over ten years ago, about why Sebastian Vettel was so fast in the Red Bull F1 car. He was in the process of clinching his fourth World Drivers Championship in a row, and many fans were getting a bit tired of the...
Speed Secrets: Playing with Nannies
I’m excited to share a story with you about driving in the rain at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps this past week. But first, some background. As we do each year, last week a friend and I took a group of drivers to Germany and Belgium — two days driving the Nürburgring...
Driving Directions: New Title & Experimenting with Lines
UPDATE: You may have noticed that I’ve started calling this thing, this series of articles, these posts, this Substack… Driving Directions. Why? Because, what’s a Substack? When I launched my new SpeedSecrets.com website, my goal was to make using it and the resources...
Speed Secrets: Finding the Limit at Mid-Ohio
Rolling out of pitlane at Mid-Ohio, lining up behind the pace car and thirty or so other cars in front of me, I’m warming the brakes and tires, preparing for the race start going green the second time by, getting used to the position of the pedals and steering wheel,...
