Speed Secret: You have to drive over the limit at times before you can consistently drive at the limit.

driving the limitWhen I talk to drivers about driving the limit, I’m talking about the limit they want to drive. For pro racers, the limit is the absolute limit – 10/10ths. For some track day drivers and club racers – those who don’t want to risk everything to drive at 10/10ths – I’m talking about consistently driving at their limit. If they’ve chosen (perhaps not consciously, even) to drive at 8/10ths, for example, that’s their version of 10/10ths. And I’d like to see them drive at that limit all the time, and not at 6/10ths, then 9/10ths, then 7/10ths, then 11/10ths, then 8/10ths….

In other words, when I talk about driving the limit, I mean driving your limit all the time. And to do that, you do have to drive just over the limit every now and then. Of course, the trick is to not drive WAY over the limit. The only way to do that is to develop the sensitivity so you can step just over the limit – let’s say, a half point over – and still bring it back to your limit. If you deliberately focus on and practice sensing that limit, you’ll be able to hone in on your limit more consistently.
