Performance & Race Driving Tip
Speed Secret: Practice your footwork
I like to coach drivers on a simulator because I can see trends in their footwork. I can stand beside the simulator and watch in real time what the driver does with his feet. The best drivers’ footwork resembles Helio Castroneves on the dance floor: light, smooth, quick, precise, accurate, consistent.
Practice. That’s how you develop the kind of footwork you need to be really quick. Of course, you can practice a lot of that on a simulator, but you can also do that while driving on the street. You can even practice it while sitting in a car with the engine turned off. Sure, you might look a bit weird to your neighbors. But hey, they do those strange things like throw a football around. So there! Mind your own business!
