Performance & Race Driving Tip
Speed Secret: Your car is talking to you. Are you listening?
To make it to the very top levels of professional racing these days, you should have started karting at a very young age. Name a champion today who didn’t cut their racing teeth behind the wheel of a kart. It’s a pretty short list.
But why? What is it about karting that turns these people into champion car racers?
The common answer is that these drivers learn racecraft – wheel-to-wheel racing. Yes, that’s part of it, but I think there’s another, even more important factor: Listening.
Every karter I’ve helped make the transition to cars seemed to immediately sense when the car was at its limit; I believe it’s because they’ve developed an ability to listen to the engine note and the noise of the wind going by. Karters know all about driving in a way that minimizes the amount they bog down the engine. They’re able to sense the speed of the kart by the wind noise. These two factors play a huge role in sensing the limits of a car. The more sensitive drivers are to the auditory input, the faster they’ll be.
Do you hear what I’m saying?
